Discussion:
Ambient 3?

I've long owned the seminal Ambient 1, and over the years have found and
acquired Ambient 2 and Ambient 4, but it seems that Ambient 3 is
mssing...does this exist? Was it ever made? There seems an odd gap and
discontinuity...

Does anybody have a line on where I can lay my hands on Ambient 3?

Thanks,
-Michael

Thanks,
It's by Laraaji, not Brian Eno. But Eno worked on the album. It looks
like amazon has it.

I don't have the album yet so I don't know how great it is.

Um ... great isn't the word I'd use.

I have the album, and I enjoy it, but ... it's basically an exercise in
strumming a harp or harp-like instrument over and over, then given the
Eno treatment.

Great to fall asleep to, but the joke among my friends (I have real
geeky friends) is that it's the longest "recalling a flashback" music
they've ever heard.

It has 5 tracks played by Laraaji on his electronic zither, a 3-part
rhythmic piece called "The Dance" and 2-part drifty "Meditation". Meditation
2 is particularly fine but I don't find myself playing the others much.
Brian produced the album but didn't do anything much that Laraaji might not
have done himself.

I agree, but our friends who like to listen to Phillip Glass must like
the Dance tracks. I tend to hear different melodies each time I put
it on, due to all the layered notes interacting.
I heard from someone who played on Ambient 4 that the story with 3 was
that BE got his hands on the first Lexicon 480L digital reverb in NYC,
as it was on it's way to the actual buyer, who thought HE was the
first to get his hands on it. The Meditation tracks have the effect
using rooms with long decay times. And the instrument Laraaji plays
is a hammered dulcimer, not a zither.
It is worth getting for the Meditation tracks, and if you like Phillip
Glass, you will like the Dance tracks.
goodbye, helicopter!

It's not my absolute favorite either, but as for where you can get
your hands on it... someone just posted it to alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.

I do not advocate piracy, but in this case (judging by everyone's
comments as to its quality) you might be justified in a
listen-before-you-buy approach.

You may now feel free to flame me about copyright etc.
